Hackers have AI. Do you have the latest update?

Remember the good old days when you had to update your phone or Window operating system once in a blue moon? Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) and the speed with which it learns, finds vulnerabilities, and (in the case of hackers) exploits those vulnerabilities, updates are required with greater and greater frequency. So, while updates once provided a few bug fixes and some exciting new features, today’s patches are mostly about one thing: security.

Updates protect against cyber threats. Every time a new security issue is discovered, developers create a patch to close that gap before criminals can take advantage of it. In June of 2026, Microsoft’s monthly “Patch Tuesday” included a record 208 bug fixes. Experts attribute this both to the growing threat AI poses AND the speed with which AI can solve problems, identify weaknesses, and code solutions.

Just like changing your passwords, updating your apps and operating system should not be negotiable. Click “Later” at your own peril. Waiting too long to update is like leaving your front door open and unlocked even though a handyman is standing RIGHT THERE with the world’s toughest lock, ready to be installed.

A few tips to make updating pain-free:

  • Turn on automatic updates if your phone or desktop allows it.
  • Install updates when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Restart your devices after updates are installed.
  • Download apps only from your device’s official app store.

Technology changes quickly, and so do the threats that target it. Regular updates help keep your apps secure, reliable, and ready when you need them most. Keeping up with AI is going to be a daily challenge going forward, but keeping up with your updates and patches is the easiest way to beat the robots at their own game!
