E-Mail Scams: Think Before You Click
Phishing scams, including emails falsely claiming to be from reputable companies such as DRN ReadiTech, are circulating once again. Some of these fraudulent messages state that there is an upgrade for DRN or DRN webmail (drtel.net); please note that these claims are inaccurate. As a precaution, do not click on links in suspicious emails. Pay attention to misspellings, which frequently suggest spam, and contact DRN ReadiTech directly if you have any concerns regarding the legitimacy of an email.
Before responding to any email, review these four key warning signs:
1. The Sender: Does the email address look suspicious or unusual? Check for strange domains (e.g., urgent@DRNaccount.net).
2. High Pressure: Does it say, “Urgent Action Required” or “Account Suspended”? Phishing scams use urgent and often threatening language to make customers panic and click.
3. Generic Greetings: Beware of greetings like, “Dear Valued Customer,” or “Dear Sir or Madam.”
4. The “Hover” Test: Hover your mouse over any link, but don’t actually click on it. If the URL looks like a jumbled mess or doesn’t match the company’s legitimate website, delete the email.
If you’re unsure, call DRN directly at 701-344-5000 rather than clicking on any links. You can also follow our Facebook page to get monthly cybersecurity tips.
Here is an example of a recent voicemail message scam. Take notice of the from email address. Do not click the links, just delete!
