The Nest – Ellendale Childcare Center, officially opens its doors to families on February 2. Families are invited to explore a nurturing environment dedicated to early learning and play-based activities, featuring specialized rooms for infants, toddlers, and Pre-K, as well as a vibrant after-school program. What sets The Nest apart is its state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, secure fenced playground, and an engaging curriculum designed to inspire curiosity and growth in every child.
Recognizing the ongoing need for quality childcare in the community, DRN, a local broadband cooperative, took meaningful steps to address childcare shortages faced by families in Ellendale and neighboring areas. In October 2025, DRN acquired the building at 305 1st Ave. S. from Dr. Craig Kendall, a chiropractor who served Ellendale for 40 years. The building underwent an extensive remodel to transform it from a chiropractic office into a modern childcare facility. DRN CEO/General Manager Kent Schimke led the search for a committed owner and operator for the center, with DRN serving as the landlord and supporting the development throughout the process.
The Nest is proudly owned and operated by Sheila Kriewald, a seasoned professional with 30 years of experience in education, including two decades of successfully owning and managing childcare centers. The licensed childcare center will be open to the public and can accommodate up to 50 children, based on age, staffing ratios, space, and licensing guidelines.
DRN, as a cooperative, upholds the “Concern for Community” principle. DRN is honored to support Ellendale by providing the building and overseeing the renovation. “We are proud to contribute to the well-being of our community by supporting the establishment of the Ellendale Childcare Center,” said Kent Schimke, DRN CEO/General Manager. “This initiative not only benefits families in Ellendale and surrounding areas but also aligns with DRN’s mission to enhance the quality of life for our employees and the broader community.”
In addition to DRN’s leadership, the realization of The Nest was made possible by Verla Jung and Mertz Lumber. Verla Jung, Start-up and Community Engagement Coordinator for Child Care Aware of North Dakota, provided invaluable guidance. The team at Mertz Lumber served as the general contractor, skillfully converting the former chiropractic office into a welcoming childcare center. The new facility includes thoughtfully designed rooms for each age group, a commercial kitchen, and a secure outdoor playground.
Sheila Kriewald has 30 years of dedicated experience in education, including 20 years of owning and operating childcare centers. Her educational background includes a degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, along with a master’s in educational leadership. She is deeply committed to building partnerships with families to support each child’s growth, development, and success. Sheila is excited to collaborate with DRN and the Ellendale community to create meaningful opportunities for children and families.
DRN also wishes to recognize the outstanding contributions of Verla Jung, whose more than 40 years of experience in early childhood education have been instrumental in addressing the childcare needs of local communities. Verla has spent 14 years operating a childcare program and 30 years as a consultant for Child Care Aware, supporting start-ups and collaborating with state and local leaders to expand quality childcare options.
DRN looks forward to welcoming children and families to The Nest and extends its gratitude to everyone who made this vision a reality. “Together, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future in Ellendale and its neighboring communities,” said Schimke.
